Alice Ruby (Black) Welty, 91, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2015, at the Pioneer Lodge in Coldwater, KS. Born July 20, 1924, on a small farm in northwest Woods County, OK, the fourth child of seven, she was the daughter of Daniel and Ada (Furtney) Black.
Alice attended a one room country school called Anderson Creek. She went to stay with her grandparents in Dacoma, OK, and attended Dacoma High School while living there. She came back home and babysat and did odd jobs. She worked at the Freedom Laundry for over twenty years.
On March 7, 1969, she married Edward Welty. They moved to Coldwater, KS and spent forty-two years together before his passing on July 5, 2011.
While living in Coldwater, Alice worked for over twenty years at the Gambles Store, where she was well known by the community. Alice seemed to know exactly what people needed when they came in, even if they didn't know. She also worked at the Comanche County Hospital for a few years. Alice was a dedicated and strong willed hard worker and will be missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by one sister: May Hendricks; a step-daughter: Nancy Ryel; a step-granddaughter: Christina Cullimore; sister-in-law: Reva Maddox; a special friend: Cheyenne Littrel; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister: Nellie; and four brothers: Roy, John, Frank, and Fred.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 21, 2015, at Crown Hill Cemetery in Coldwater, KS.
