Augusta "Gussie" White

Augusta "Gussie" White, 86, of Madison, Alabama, died on August 21, 2011, at home. She was born on August 23, 1924, in Sprigg, West Virginia to Albert and Ollie Crum. She graduated from Rupert High School in 1942. In a patriotic gesture, Gussie worked for the Navy during World War II at an ammunition plant in Dover, Delaware. This is where she met Jack White of Coldwater, Kansas, who was the love of her life and future husband. In 1946, Gussie traveled to Kansas by train and the two were united in marriage in a chapel in Dodge City, Kansas. They were married 22 years before Jack's death in 1968 in Coldwater, Kansas. They were blessed with four daughters. Gussie was a homemaker for many years as she lovingly raised her daughters and then later worked in food service at the Comanche County Hospital. After Jack's death, she spent 34 years as a sorority house director at Northern Illinois in DeKalb, Illinois and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Gussie is survived by four daughters: Linda Shanley of Alabama, Jaci Swafford of Alabama, Donna (Gary) Robbins of Kansas, and Jenni White of Alabama. She is also survived by one sister: Virginia Peters of Alabama and one brother: C.W. "Bill" Crum of Illinois. There are 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren that brought many smiles of joy into her life. She was affectionately known as GG to all the great-grandchildren and her friends both young and old.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two sisters.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in her memory to Doctors Without Borders, P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, Maryland 21741.
