Bonnie Ferrell (McGee) Brown, 102, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Comanche County Hospital in Coldwater, KS. Born February 21, 1915, at Dilworth, MN, she was the daughter of Daniel Jackson and Viola H. (Zimmerman) McGee.
When Bonnie was about 3 years old, her mother died. She and her sister, Vallie, went to live with their grandparents, Jud and Julia McGee of Buffalo, OK. Bonnie lived with or close to her grandparents until their deaths.
Bonnie married Rufus Brown on November 30, 1933, on the family farm east of Buffalo, OK. To this union, Patricia Fern, Viola Claudia, Rodney A, and Dennis Arthur were born. Rufus preceded her in death on April 10, 1986.
Rufus and Bonnie lived in Buffalo, OK, Monte Vista, CO, and Selman, OK, prior to moving to Kansas in 1944, moving into Protection, KS in 1952. Bonnie worked up until she was 76 years young, but still did volunteer work. She was employed at Ma Brown's Café, Sam Wheelen's Café (Don's Place now), and at the Protection Valley Manor.
Bonnie was a member of the Christian Church in Buffalo, OK, Protection, KS, and Coldwater, KS. Other memberships include: Twin Hills E.H.U. Club; Rebekah Lodge; she was named Comanche County Woman of the Year; and she wrote a weekly blog for the Protection Press and was recently recognized for her writing by the Wichita Eagle.
Bonnie was always known as Grandma Bonnie to the young folks and as they grew up she became Grandma Bonnie to their children.
In addition to her husband, parents, and grandparents, she was preceded in death by one daughter and her husband: Patricia and Glen Crow; two daughters-in-law: Annie Brown and De Brown; a grandson: Ernest Leon; granddaughter: Cathy Crow and baby; great-granddaughter: Melody Rollins; sister: Vallie Buress; 3 half-brothers; and 2 half-sisters.
Bonnie is survived by children: Rodney Brown of Protection, KS, Viola Trummel and husband Richard of Wichita, KS, and Dennis Brown and wife Cathy of Burkburnett, TX; half-sister: Blanche; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of dear friends.
Calling times are from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater, KS.
Graveside service is at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at Protection Cemetery in Protection, KS, with Andrew Evans presiding.
