Obituary

Long time teacher and coach, Carlos Lee Amaro, 62, peacefully passed on June 19, 2016 at South Wind Hospice in Pratt, KS. He was born December 5, 1953 to Reyes and Jennie (Gonzalez) Amaro at Kinsley, KS. He attended grade school at St. Nicholas grade school and graduated from Kinsley High School in 1971. Carlos went on to play football for Pratt Community College for two years then transferred to Fort Hays State University where he continued playing football, graduating from FHSU in 1976. Carlos began his teaching career in Osborne, Ks. In August, 1980 he began his lifelong career at Coldwater/South Central schools in Coldwater, KS. He was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, Holy Spirit Catholic Church, NEA, CCEA and a lifelong alumni member of Fort Hays State University.

Carlos' passion was coaching and working with children. Many students passed through his classes which included P.E., History, Driver's Ed., Weights, Football, Basketball and Track. He was the Athletic Director for most of his teaching career. He especially loved coaching football and led three teams to undefeated seasons and State championships. He was awarded numerous coaching honors including: Kansas Coaches Association Coach of the Year 1995, Associated Press Coach of the Year 1995, Dodge City Globe All Area Football Coach 1984 & 1993, NFICA Section 5 Distinguished Service Award 1997 and KCCTCA Boys Track & Field Coach of the Year 1986. He coached the West team in the 1995 Shrine Bowl Game and was Head Coach of the West team at the KEMFA All-Star game in 1996.

On January 1, 2005 he was united in marriage to Denise (Bergkamp) Koch in Coldwater, KS. Carlos is survived by his wife Denise, mother Jennie, two sisters, Rozella Trevizo and Audrey Steckline, step-daughter Andrea Koch and step-son Jarrett Koch, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 7:00 on Thursday, June 23 with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 at Hatfield-Prusa Mortuary in Coldwater, KS. Rosary will follow for anyone choosing to attend. The funeral service will be at the South Central High School Friday, June 24 at 10:00 with burial following in Crown Hill Cemetery in Coldwater, KS. State championship teams of 1985, 1994 & 1995 will be honorary pall bearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to South Wind Hospice, Holy Spirit Catholic Church, or South Central High School Football Department in care of Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, P.O. Box 417, Coldwater, KS 67029.

OVER THE YEARS CARLOS ACCUMULATED HUNDREDS OF PHOTOS OF HIS TEAMS AND PLAYERS. THESE WILL BE AVAILABLE DURING THE VISITATION AND AT THE SERVICE AND THE FAMILY WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME ANYONE WHO SEES A PHOTO OF THEMSELVES, TO TAKE IT AS A REMEMBRANCE OF COACH AMARO.
