Darrel Wesley Girk, 72, passed away June 18, 2020, at the Comanche County Hospital in Coldwater, KS. Born February 18, 1948, in Ashland, KS, the son of Wesley Wallace "Buck" and Delsie Virginia (Davidson) Girk, Darrel was a farmer and rancher.
Darrel was a lifetime resident of Protection, KS. He graduated from Protection High School in 1966 and attended Pratt Community College, where he was a member of the football team and track team. Darrel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Protection, KS, a member of the Box Ranch Association, had served on the Rural Water Board, and Masonic Lodge.
Darrel had a passion for horses and roping. He started learning how to train horses and rope at a young age. The old timers in Protection would ask him to help rope and work cattle and he always was eager to help. He once said there wasn't an animal on the farm he hadn't roped: kitties, chickens, geese, dogs, but not a deer, he did try but they were too fast. He did however rope a bobcat! True story!!
On June 18, 1968, he married Terri Herd in Coldwater, KS. They had two children: Reesa Dionne and Wesley Slade. They later divorced.
On February 14, 2001, he married Terena Kay Henderson in Taos, NM. She survives.
He is survived by his wife: Terena Girk of Protection, KS; one daughter: Reesa Smyth (Joe) of Plymouth, MN; one son: Slade Girk (Suzie) of Protection, KS; sister-in-law: Charlotte Girk of Protection, KS; brother: Ross Girk (Lisa) of Coldwater, KS; sister: Nyla Sherman (Kent) of Ulysses, KS; sister-in-law: Karen Girk of Protection, KS; six grandchildren: Max & Wyatt Baker of Plymouth, MN and Eli, Isaac, Lyla, & Abbie Girk of Protection, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Nyle and Gary Girk.
Calling times are from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday, June 22, 2020, at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater, KS.
Memorial service is at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at United Methodist Church in Protection, KS, with Pastor Wayne Stephens presiding. Please remember social distancing and feel free to wear a mask if you wish.
A private family burial will precede the memorial service at Protection Cemetery in Protection, KS.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Protection United Methodist Church, Comanche County Hospital, Hospice of the Prairie, or Protection Golf Course in care of Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, P.O. Box 417, Coldwater, KS 67029.
