Francis "Frank" Leroy Young, 81, passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at Pratt Health and Rehab in Pratt, KS. Born January 14, 1936, at Protection, KS, he was the son of Alva and Opal (Huffman) Young. He grew up on farms near Protection and graduated from Protection High School in 1955.
He joined the U.S. Air Force after graduation, and was trained as a jet fighter mechanic, serving at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, for the duration of his military service. On May 4, 1957, he married Inez Kathryn Young at Alamogordo, NM. To this union were born twin daughters: Tacey Elaine and Teresa Lynn.
After his discharge, he worked as a certified Ford Mechanic for several years. In 1969, he attended Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, OK, earning his diploma as an Airline Service Mechanic and his Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic License in 1971. During his life, he managed the Hugoton, KS Airport, worked for Beech Aircraft in Liberal, KS as a line mechanic and as a Production Test Pilot, and was Director of Restoration at the Mid America Air Museum in Liberal, KS, retiring as Executive Director of the museum in 2004.
After Frank and Inez retired, they moved to Lake Arrowhead near Medicine Lodge, KS, where they enjoyed fishing, the wildlife, bird watching, sewing, crafts, reading, and relaxing. Inez preceded him in death on December 11, 2012.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Richard Young.
He is survived by two daughters: Tacey Teel of Manhattan, KS and Teresa Rector (Jack) of Benbrook, TX; one brother: James Young (Lena) of Medicine Lodge, KS; three sisters: Kathy Turley (Jerry) of Garden City, KS, Mable DePriest (Larry) of Protection, KS, and Sandra Moore of Dodge City, KS; five grandchildren: Justin Teel, Kerry Teel, Jake Rector, David Rector, and Melissa Rector; two great-grandchildren: Tristan and Kylee Teel; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Graveside service is at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 11, 2017, at Protection Cemetery, Protection, KS, with Pastor Tom Walters presiding and full military honors.
