Gladys Irene Sommerfeld
Gladys Irene Sommerfeld, 93, passed away Friday, September 20, 2013, at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, KS. Born December 6, 1919, on a farm south of Protection, KS, she was the daughter of Charles and Ida (Zimmerman) Schweitzer.
Gladys was nearly a lifetime resident of Protection, KS, moving to Newton, KS in 2006. She graduated from Protection High School in 1938 and received her teaching certificate from Hesston College. She was a member of the Protection Mennonite Church in Protection, KS. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and working in her flower garden. Gladys was a farm wife and also worked as a housekeeper for the Pioneer Lodge in Coldwater, KS.
On March 6, 1949, she married Raymond Sommerfeld at the Mennonite Country Church south of Protection, KS. He preceded her in death on April 5, 2006.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by one daughter: Kathy Sommerfeld of Newton, KS; and two sisters: Myrtle Miller of La Junta, CO and Esther Troyer of Grove, OK.
Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday, September 23, 2013, at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater, KS.
Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Protection, KS, with Rev. Jessie Zimmerman presiding.
Burial will follow the funeral service at the Protection Mennonite Cemetery south of Protection, KS.
