Esther Irene Maris

Esther Irene Maris, 95, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2014 at the Ashland Health Center Long Term Care Unit in Ashland, KS. Born April 20, 1919, at her grandparents' farm south of Protection, KS, the daughter of Claude and Alma (Goos) Rieff, she was a homemaker.
Irene was nearly a lifetime resident of Protection, KS, moving to Ashland, KS in 2006. She attended Baxter County School and Protection High School. Irene was a member of the Protection United Methodist Church; 50 year member of Order of Eastern Star #224; and Royal Neighbors.
She married Raleigh Warren Maris on December 21, 1936 in Greensburg, KS. He preceded her in death on August 6, 1991.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter: Betty Kay; and one brother: Loyd Rieff.

Irene is survived by two sons: Don Maris and wife Karen of Ashland, KS and Ron Maris and wife Talma of Coldwater, KS; one daughter: Pat Winton and husband Don of Wichita, KS; a son-in-law: Neil Kay of Protection, KS; seven grandchildren: Kevin Maris (Kala), Kelly Weatherford (Stuart), Chad Winton (Christina), Jeff Kay (Rebecca), Kendal Kay (Karrie), Janell Smit (Hannes), and Delana Irene Long (Nick); seventeen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater, KS.

Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Protection, KS, with Rev. Juanita Catlin presiding.
Burial will follow the funeral service at Protection Cemetery in Protection, KS.
