Jack Evan Sooter

Jack Evan Sooter, 83, passed away Monday, February 13, 2012, at the South Wind Hospice House in Pratt, KS. Born April 2, 1928, at Dodge City, KS, he was the son of Ray Evan and Jessie Marie (Bigbee) Sooter.
Jack grew up in the Coldwater, KS area and attended Coldwater Schools. He worked for Southwestern Bell in Kansas for many years. He was a veteran of World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War, serving in the United States Navy. He worked as a heavy equipment operator, building roads and highways, in Hawaii and California. Later in life, he helped revitalize, restore, and maintain the city parks in Coldwater, KS.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church in California. He served as chaplain for the V.F.W. in California and as commander for the V.F.W. in Coldwater. Jack was named the Citizen of the Year for Coldwater, KS.
In July of 1950, he married Loretta Jean Sheils at Kansas City, KS. To this union, two children were born.
He is survived by one son: Jeffrey Evan Sooter and wife Tina of South Lake Tahoe, CA; one daughter: Sheila Susan (Sooter) Gaestel and husband Joseph of Merced, CA; seven grandchildren: Dianna (Sooter) McKinney and husband Tim, Bryan Sooter and wife Romy, Scott Sooter, Joseph Gaestel V, Jorden Gaestel, Justin Gaestel, and Sarah Gaestel; one step-grandchild: Annabelle Dressler; one great-grandchild: Erik McKinney; one brother: Jay D. Sooter and wife Sonya of Wichita, KS; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings: Frances, George, Bette, Weltha Ann, Wanda, and Dorothy; and the mother of his children: Loretta Jean.

Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, (Family Will Greet Friends From 5-7) at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater, KS. Funeral service is at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 16, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Coldwater, KS, with Rev. Gary Merritt and Pastor Doug Johnson presiding. Burial will follow the funeral service at Crown Hill Cemetery in Coldwater, KS, with full military honors.
