James Daniel Thompson, 96, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2017, at Pioneer Lodge in Coldwater, KS. Born April 20, 1921, at Coldwater, KS, he was the son of Walter T. and Clara (Hase) Thompson.
A lifetime resident of Comanche County, KS, James was a farmer and rancher. He attended Coldwater Schools and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from 1942-1946. During his military service, he attended ConEd Electrical School in Chicago, IL and received: American Service Medal; Asiatic Pacific Service Medal; Philippine Liberation Ribbon; World War II Victory Medal; and Good Conduct Medal.
On March 30, 1946, he married Louise Parcel at the First Presbyterian Church in Coldwater, KS. She preceded him in death on August 8, 2004.
His memberships included: Coldwater United Methodist Church; Coldwater First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder; Comanche Masonic Lodge #295; he was a Shriner; Coldwater V.F.W.; and Sunny Valley 4-H Leader.
James is survived by three children: Kenneth Thompson (Julia) of Liberal, KS, Sue Weimaster (Allen) of Russell, KS, and Wayne Thompson (Susie) of Coldwater, KS; one brother: Clyde Thompson of Excelsior Springs, MO; six grandchildren: Amy Thompson, Sarah Thompson, Angela Johnston (Jeff), Melissa Short, Ashley Frazier (Rusty), and Tyler Thompson (Rachel); seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Wayne Thompson and Clair Thompson; and two sisters: Anna Lou Einsel and Marjorie Overocker.
Memorial service is at 11:30 a.m., Monday July 24, 2017, at the United Methodist Church in Coldwater, KS, with Pastor Juan Espinoza presiding.
James never did like flowers and memorials are suggested to Pioneer Lodge, S.C.H.S. FFA, or Comanche County 4-H in care of Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, P.O. Box 417, Coldwater, KS 67029.
