Lena Fay (Rosendale) Young, 80, passed away peacefully Friday June 14, 2019 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital with her children by her side. Lena was born the first child of Keith C. Rosendale and Helen A. (Smalling) Rosendale in Fargo, OK, on June 18, 1938.
Lena attended grade school in Fargo, OK and Gage, OK, and high school in Fort Supply, OK, graduating HS in 1956. She was a straight "A" student all 4 years of high school and senior class Valedictorian. In 1960 Lena received a Bachelor of Science in Education, majoring in Home Economics with a minor in Speech from Northwestern State College, Alva OK. She received scholastic honors and was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, National Honor Society in Education. Lena participated in choir and theater and was a member of Alpha Psi Omega, National Honorary Dramatic Fraternity. Following college Lena started her career teaching home economics in Protection, KS. She became a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Society International of Key Women Educators.
On May 21, 1961 she married James A. Young at the Church of Christ in Woodward, OK.
Lena loved fishing and living by a lake. James and Lena raised their family while living at Clark State Fishing Lake south of Kingsdown, KS, for over 26 years. Following her children's graduation from Bucklin High School, Lena returned to teaching Home Economics in Bucklin, KS. She volunteered countless hours supporting the community and high school activities.
Following James's retirement from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, they moved to Lake Arrowhead north of Medicine Lodge, KS, in December 1995. In Medicine Lodge, Lena was an active member of the First Christian Church, lead children's story hour at the library and was on the election board for Barber County, KS. Always the educator, Lena taught many friends and family fishing, sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, upholstery, cooking, baking, canning, gardening, and many arts and crafts projects.
Lena was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband and her children: James A. Young Jr of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Jacquelyn A. Gossett (Brett) of Chuluota, FL, grandchildren: James D. Gossett and Makayla A. Gossett, sisters: Betty Semmel, Sylvia Hickman (Gary), Clara Hall (Warren), Patty Parker, and brother: Claud Rosendale. Lena was loved dearly by all and touched many lives with her huge heart and generous spirit.
Calling times are from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., (Family Will Greet Friends From 5-6 p.m.), Friday, June 21, 2019, at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater, KS.
Funeral service is at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 22, 2019, at First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, KS, with Pastor Tom Walters presiding.
Burial service will follow the funeral service at Protection Cemetery, Protection, KS.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the First Christian Church in Medicine Lodge KS, in care of Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, P.O. Box 417, Coldwater, KS 67029.
