Marjorie Overocker
Marjorie (Thompson) Overocker was born in Kiowa County, KS, on March 21, 1923 and died at the Comanche County Hospital in Coldwater, KS on October 4, 2014, at the age of 91. She was the third child of Walter and Clara (Hase) Thompson. On August 20, 1944, Marjorie married John Overocker. Three children were born to this union: Linda (Overocker) Winters; Stanley Overocker; and Myrna (Overocker) Mendenhall.
Marjorie graduated from Coldwater High School in 1941. She taught at several rural country schools during the war. She attended Wilcox Beauty Academy in Dodge City, KS, and operated a beauty shop in her home in Coldwater from 1954 to 1961. In 1961, Marjorie returned to college at Northwestern College in Alva, OK. After receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education, she taught for 2 years in Burlington, CO, and for 7 years in Pratt, KS. In 1972, she moved to Wichita and worked for the Cargill Company in corporate accounting for 22 years. On April 1, 1994, Marjorie retired and returned to Coldwater, where she was active in the Methodist Church, Civic Club, P.E.O., U.M.W., Eastern Star, and Kensington Club. She also enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with friends and family.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband: John; her daughter: Myrna; her granddaughter: Robin (Mendenhall) Brady; granddaughter: Robin Winters; grandson-in-law: Tim Brady; her parents; her sister and brother-in-law: Anna Lou and Victor Einsel; brother: Wayne Thompson; brother and sister-in-law: Clair and Gwen Thompson; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Louise Thompson, Jay and Mary Overocker, and Roy and Irene Boisseau.
She is survived by her children: Linda Winters of Durango, CO and Stan (Alice) Overocker of Olathe, KS; four grandchildren: Nasha (Steve) Winters Ottersberg of Durango, CO, John (Crystal) Winters of Wichita, KS, Chris (Kellie) Overocker of Mission, KS, and Nick (Brooke Breitenstein) Overocker of Olathe, KS; four great-grandchildren: Sidney Rose Overocker of Mission, KS and Cody, Porter, and Madison Winters of Wichita, KS; two brothers: James Thompson of Greensburg, KS and Clyde (Nancy) Thompson of Excelsior Springs, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Family Will Be Present From 5-7), Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater, KS.
Memorial service is at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 9, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Coldwater, KS, with Rev. Gary Merritt presiding. Burial will follow the funeral service at Crown Hill Cemetery in Coldwater, KS.
