Maxine Vivian Herd, 103, passed away Monday, March 11, 2019 at Pioneer Lodge in Coldwater, KS. Born August 19, 1915, on a farm northeast of Wilmore, KS, she was the daughter of Charles and Hattie (Uhl) England.
Maxine was a lifetime resident of Comanche County, KS. She attended Sunnyside Country School, graduated from Coldwater High School, and received a lifetime teaching certificate from Emporia State University. She was a member of Protection United Methodist Church; Methodist Ladies Bible Study; P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter DM; and Order of Eastern Star.
On June 6, 1937, she married James "Junior" Herd, Jr. at the Antioch Methodist Church in Buttermilk, KS. He preceded her in death on May 3, 1995.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son: Kerry Don Herd; a grandson: Matthew Jacob Leeper; two great-grandsons: David Sonka and Colt David Leeper; a brother: Charles "Bud" England; and a sister: Frances Coles.
She is survived by one son: Warren A. Herd of Temple, TX; one daughter: Sherry Leeper (Mac) of Protection, KS; one daughter-in-law: Phyllis Herd of Denver, CO; nine grandchildren: Karen Plachy (Mike), Kelly Harrod (Calvin), Kim Sonka (Kevin), Bret Herd, Kristi Hensley (Sean), Mishaun Estes (Brad), Tiffany Pike (Chris), Nathan Leeper (Jenny), and Andrew Leeper (Heather); and twenty-four great-grandchildren: Meghan, Madeline, & Mallory Plachy, Devynn & Ashley Yerina, Torrey & Matt Sonka, Evan & Carys Harrod, Josh & MacKenzy Meis, Sydney Leeper, Talon & Ridge Estes, Trace, Breckyne, Tade, Briekyne, & Trage Pike, Taylor, Brynn, & Colson Leeper, and Alida & Aycen Leeper.
Calling times are from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday, March 14, 2019, at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater, KS.
Memorial service is at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 15, 2019, at Protection United Methodist Church with Pastor Wayne Stephens presiding. Burial is in Crown Hill Cemetery, Coldwater, KS.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Protection United Methodist Church or Pioneer Lodge in care of Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, P.O. Box 417, Coldwater, KS 67029.
