Maxine Elizabeth (McKinney) Smith

Maxine Elizabeth (McKinney) Smith, 91, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at the Comanche County Hospital in Coldwater, Kansas. Born August 6, 1920, on her parents' farm on the Comanche/Kiowa County Line, she was the daughter of Walter and Sadie (Marley) McKinney.

Maxine attended Reeder Rural School for eight years and graduated from Coldwater High School in 1939. After graduation, she went to Mt. Dora, Florida, and worked for the Coast Line Railroad.

On March 2, 1940, she married Clifford Henderson. They had one daughter, Sara Ann.

Clifford and Maxine operated the Henderson Dairy near Coldwater for ten years. Later they owned and operated Cliff and Mac's Drive-In until Clifford's death on October 19, 1967.

Maxine married Darrell Smith of Coldwater on July 30, 1971. They enjoyed their hobby of gardening and sharing fresh produce with relatives and friends. Darrell preceded her in death on July 8, 1983.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter: Sara Ann Weatherbee; one brother: Russell McKinney; and three sisters: Naomi Ellis, Merle Olson, and Dorothy McKinney.

She is survived by two grandchildren: Chad Weatherbee of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Charlann Forguson and her husband Tony of Kingston, Oklahoma; four great-grandchildren: Cole and Presley Weatherbee and Kara and Daylan Forguson; two brothers: Harold McKinney and his wife Mary Alice of Coldwater, Kansas, and Robert McKinney of Weskan, Kansas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside service is at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, October 8, 2011, at Crown Hill Cemetery in Coldwater, Kansas, with Rev. Gary Merritt presiding.
