Obituary

Roger Roy Hoffman peacefully walked into the arms of his Savior on October 29, 2021, at the Comanche County Hospital, holding his loving wife's hand all the way. He was born November 13, 1935, north of Coldwater at the family home to James William and Eunice Ailsie (Squire) Hoffman. A longtime resident of the Buttermilk area, he was a lifelong farmer and rancher.

Roger, his brothers, Doyle and Allen, and parents moved to the now family farm/ranch in 1939 onto a ½ section homestead that his father had bought around Roger's birth. Being the youngest he enjoyed the benefits of two older brothers when it came to things like hunting and fishing and whether they liked it or not he tagged along whenever possible, even if it was into a bit of mischief. He started helping on the farm early, driving the tractor that pulled the combine as young as eight or nine. He attended the Avilla School just two miles north of his house and then attended Coldwater High School graduating with the Class of 1953. He enjoyed his high school time, singing in the glee club, competing in football and track, and, of course, like any young man of the 50's, the extracurricular activity of cars, motorcycles, and girls. He told many times how his buds and him would "chase those Protection boys back to the five-mile corner and he said they would do the same to them." He always thought it was funny since he eventually married a Protection girl.

Growing up during the war, he was fascinated with planes, putting together model airplanes in the light of a kerosene lantern on many cold winter nights, so after a brief try at college in Pratt, he decided to join the Air Force in 1954, serving as a mechanic and later supply sergeant, with one tour in Europe. While in the service, he married Karen Jo Douglas of Greensburg on September 9, 1954. They later divorced but to this union was born Deborah Rae, Roy Allen, Melani Waive, and Sheldon James. The couple lived in Dodge City after Roger got out of the service, where he worked as a mechanic for McCoy-Skaggs Ford and later drove a truck for Fairmont Foods before moving to the Buttermilk area to help his father and brother on the family farm where he worked and lived until his death.

He dedicated his life to Christ at a crusade at Antioch in 1963 changing his life forever. On May 3, 1970, Roger married Sandra Fay Fitzwater at the Protection Methodist Church; they were married 51 years until his death. To this union was born Kyle Dee and Brandon Lee. Roger and Sandy raised their growing family while working the farm and serving their Lord in various capacities. Roger loved his farm, working in the field, feeding his cattle, and building wood and metal projects. He even continued to feed cattle into his early 80's. He was a founding Elder at Antioch Community Church and worshiped there for most of his life, as well as the Coldwater and Pratt Assembly of God churches. Roger and Sandy attended several Lay Witness Trips and other missions over the years, including a mission trip to Haiti in 1984 with Duane Huck where Roger absolutely loved preaching, singing, building, and, most of all, just playing games with the Haitian children. The ministry he was the most proud to belong to was Gideon's International. He belonged to the Gideon's for over 50 years, one of the longest members in the Pratt Camp.

Roger's heart was big, and he loved to be Grandpa. He and Sandy "adopted" Duane & Beth Huck as "their kids" many years ago, and since they had no parents close, Roger and Sandy soon became the grandparents to all their kids, loving them like their own in every aspect they could. In fact, if you ask, you will find several others that called him Grandpa and he cherished them all.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents and in-laws, his two brothers, one son, Sheldon James Hoffman, two grandchildren, Lona Elizabeth (Huck) Ellis and Tyler James Hoffman, one great grandson, Tegan Gregg Ellis, four brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, and two nieces.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy Hoffman of Buttermilk; Debi Sherman, Melani Hoffman (Jesse Lozoya), and Roy (Gina) Hoffman all of Coldwater; Kiffany Hoffman of Vacaville, CA; Kyle (Kristi) Hoffman of Buttermilk; Brandon (Missy) Hoffman of Hutchinson; a foster daughter, Marti Wysong of Dana Point, CA; Duane/Beth Huck of Buttermilk; 36 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; and one Uncle, Bobby (Lois) Hoffman of Wichita. Beloved friends/family in Christ, Bob & Joyce Smith and their children, as well as so many other relatives and friends too numerous to name but no less loved.
